Arriving in Bilbao in August with the idea of an evening market visit does not work. Of the six municipal markets, four have no afternoon session this month, and the one every visitor knows, La Ribera, opens its afternoon only on Fridays.
Are Bilbao’s markets open in the afternoon in August? Only two of the six. Trauko opens 17:00 to 20:00 Monday to Friday, and La Ribera on Fridays and the eves of public holidays, also 17:00 to 20:00. Deusto, Otxarkoaga and Labayru shut their August afternoons, and El Ensanche has no afternoon in any season.

August closes almost every afternoon
The summer timetable is not one rule but several, and August strips a layer off it. Deusto, Otxarkoaga and Labayru close their afternoons for the entire month, each for a slightly different reason.
Each of the three drops its afternoon for a different reason:
- Deusto — its summer afternoon only ever existed on Fridays in July, so by August there is nothing left to close
- Otxarkoaga — runs Friday afternoons from 17:00 to 19:30 in July and drops them in August
- Labayru — loses its afternoon service outright, including the Friday 17:00 to 20:00 slot it keeps the rest of the summer
That leaves two markets with any afternoon at all: Trauko, Monday to Friday from 17:00 to 20:00, and La Ribera, Fridays and eves of public holidays from 17:00 to 20:00. On a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoon in August, Trauko is the only municipal market open in Bilbao.
The earliest door and the latest
Assuming a Spanish market opens at eight is right in four cases out of six and wrong at both ends of the scale.
The Mercado del Ensanche opens at 7:30, half an hour before any other and on all six days in either season, according to Bilbao Zerbitzuak. At the other end, Labayru opens at 9:00 in summer and returns to 8:00 in winter. The gap between the two is an hour and a half in the same city on the same morning.
Saturday sorts them differently. Four markets close at 14:00, El Ensanche at 14:30 and La Ribera at 15:00, the latest market closing in Bilbao and the reason a Saturday lunchtime arrival still works there and nowhere else.
Which market fits the hour
- Before work → El Ensanche, open from 7:30
- A weekday afternoon in August → Trauko, the only one trading
- A Friday afternoon → five of the six, with Trauko and La Ribera until 20:00
- A late Saturday morning → La Ribera, open until 15:00
- A Monday afternoon in winter → any of them except La Ribera
- A short evening window → note Otxarkoaga closes at 19:00, not 20:00
The six markets, and the one that left the list
The current list has six markets, according to Bilbao Zerbitzuak: La Ribera, El Ensanche, the Mercado de Deusto, Labayru, Otxarkoaga and Trauko. All six trade Monday to Saturday and none opens on Sunday.
That number has changed. Earlier notes from the same body listed seven and included the San Ignacio market, which no longer appears in the full timetable. Older lists naming seven markets are still in circulation, so a search by that name returns an entry the current timetable no longer carries.
Only one of them is a visitor destination. The Mercado de la Ribera, in the old town, has its stall-by-stall timetables set out in the guide to La Ribera market. The other five are neighbourhood markets selling the same produce to the people who live around them, which is precisely why their hours are built around a working week rather than a visit.
Winter hours
Outside the summer window of 15 June to 15 September, the ordinary timetable returns and the picture inverts: five of the six open Monday to Friday afternoons, and the exception is El Ensanche.

Two details hold all year. La Ribera closes on Monday afternoons even though it opens the rest of the week, and Otxarkoaga shuts at 19:00, an hour before the others.
So the winter week has a shape worth remembering: Monday afternoon is covered by four markets, Tuesday to Friday afternoon by five, and Saturday afternoon by none of the six. No municipal market in Bilbao trades after 15:00 on a Saturday in any season.
Summer hours, until 15 September
The summer timetable runs from 15 June to 15 September, and two of the six do not apply it at all.

El Ensanche and Trauko keep their usual hours through the summer. Of the four that do change, Labayru goes furthest by pushing its opening to 9:00, an hour later than the rest of the city. Otxarkoaga adds a condition no other market applies, closing the afternoons before public holidays.
Getting to them, and who sets the hours
Bilbao Zerbitzuak is the public body under Bilbao city council that runs the municipal markets through an administrative control and maintenance programme. It publishes the timetables and it is the body that changes them by season.
That distinction matters where the building’s hours meet the traders’ own. At La Ribera the building’s timetable comes from Bilbao Zerbitzuak and each stall sets its own on top, so the two do not always agree: some stalls advertise afternoons the building does not open.
