Looking for a Christmas market in Bilbao? Go to Gabonart on the Arenal quay for ceramics and jewellery bought from the maker, or Doña Casilda Park for food trucks and free shows. Neither is a mulled-wine town square. Santo Tomás adds talo, cider and cheese for a single Monday, and both Arenal sites sit by Casco Viejo metro.
Do you need a ticket for the Bilbao Christmas lights? No, they are free on the street from late November to early January. Walk from Casco Viejo metro to Doña Casilda park in 27 minutes, through El Arenal, Plaza Circular and Plaza Moyúa, then take the tram back from Euskalduna at 187 m. Allow an hour with stops.
Bilbao at Christmas with kids? Book the Guggenheim workshops only for a child who speaks Spanish or Basque; otherwise choose the 6-lane slide on Ripa quay or the funicular up Artxanda, where children ride free and adults pay 3.50 euros. Is the Santo Tomás fair in Bilbao worth planning a trip around? Yes, if a farmers’ market appeals more than a Christmas market. See the Guggenheim from 10:00 to 19:00 on Sunday 20 December, spend the next day grazing along the riverside stalls, and ride to Casco Viejo, 203 m away, on a €2.00 single ticket.
When is the Three Kings parade in Bilbao? Tuesday 5 January 2027 in the early evening, and Moyua is the stop for it. The last edition brought a Sweet Factory with 3 tonnes of gluten-free sweets, floats from Toy Story and Bluey and a reserved 40 m stretch at Gran Vía 25. Then comes a holiday, when only the Guggenheim of the big three museums opens.
What is open in Bilbao on Christmas Day? Very little indoors, but a day still works. Ride up Artxanda before the 14:30 break, cross the river on the 0.60-euro bridge gondola and eat a booked lunch, as one riverside hotel charges 85 euros. Shift your Guggenheim slot to the 24th, before 17:00, or Saturday the 26th, open until 19:00.
When is Basque cider house season? From mid January to late April, when cider is poured straight from the barrel; outside those months the barrel is gone and the bottle takes over. Is the Artxanda funicular worth it? A rack railway from 1915 climbs to the viewpoint that explains the whole city in three minutes, and what you pay depends entirely on what is in your pocket: €3.50 one way without a card, €0.73 with Barik. It runs until 10pm, later on summer weekends, and buses A7 and E5 reach the same summit.
What does Aste Nagusia mean? Great week: Bilbao's nine-day festival, running 22 to 30 August this year, with a vocabulary of its own. The same museum renders the giants as Gigantes de Bilbao and leaves kalejira, the street parade, untouched. Those days Euskal Museoa opens free, 10am to 7pm, and the Artxanda funicular runs until midnight.
How much Basque do you need in Bilbao? None to get around, and six words to avoid a closed door: itxita is closed, doakoa free, ordutegia timetable, sarrera admission, murriztua reduced and gunea fare zone. The harder question is which of a place's two names is the official one: Sopela is official, Sopelana the Spanish form.
When is the Basque Museum in Bilbao free? Euskal Museoa charges nothing on Wednesdays and shuts entirely on Tuesdays, the opposite pattern to almost every other museum in the city. Euskotren line E4 gets there in 84 minutes from Matiko, and the Old Port and Torre Ercilla are walkable.
Can you visit the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum now? Yes: it is open right now, in a 1970 building worth the visit on its own, with Ataria (bat) running to 8 October. On 5 October it becomes a different museum entirely, as the extension by Norman Foster and Luis María Uriarte opens around Richard Serra's sculpture Bilbao.
Which Bilbao metro line do you need? Three lines follow the two banks of the estuary: Line 1 to the beaches, Line 2 to the left bank, Line 3 to the northern districts, all meeting at Zazpi Kaleak. A tram runs along the surface past the Guggenheim, where no metro station reaches, for a flat €0.74; the metro starts at €1.02.
Which Bilbao museum should you pick? Four museums, three different closing days and three free windows that never overlap, so the weekday matters more than taste. Where does the train to Mundaka and Bermeo leave from? Which Bizkaia villages can you reach without a car? Gernika is 61 minutes by train, Mundaka 79, Bermeo 84, and Bakio has a bus every half hour in summer. The catch is not distance, it is the last service home: the last full train leaves Bilbao at 9.10pm except on Saturday nights. Barik fares run from €1.02 to €2.45.
How do you get to Gaztelugatxe from Bilbao without a car? By the A3518 from Moyua to Bakio, every 30 minutes on summer weekdays. Entry costs nothing and booking is only required on controlled-access days, capped at 1,462 people. The provincial council advises leaving the car behind; ahead lie 1,200 metres at a 35% gradient and 241 steps.
Is Gernika worth a day trip from Bilbao? Yes, if you plan around the Peace Museum, which costs €6.50, opens free on Saturday afternoons from 4pm and shuts for most of January, from 1 to 26. The painting everyone asks about is in Madrid, at the Reina Sofía. Euskotren line E4 gets there in 61 minutes from Matiko.
What card do you need to get around Bilbao and Bizkaia? The Barik: one anonymous €3 card covers up to ten people at once, works on sixteen different services, and keeps working as far as San Sebastián and the French border. With it Bilbobus costs €0.73 and the metro from €1.02, and the card stays valid for seven years.
Is there a free day at the Guggenheim Bilbao? No, but there is a recurring half-price window written into the exhibition calendar rather than the weekly timetable: 4pm to 7pm on the last day of each show. An adult ticket is €18, the reduced €9, audio guide included, and from 15 June to 7 September it opens on Mondays.
How do you say Getxo and Gaztelugatxe? GET-cho and Gas-teh-loo-GA-cheh: four letters carry a different value in Basque, z, x, tx and j, and they account for almost every name on the Bilbao metro map. Basque z is an s, so Bizkaia sounds Biskaia. The Academy's own rule 87, from 1998, says nobody will correct you.
When is the Itsasmuseum Bilbao free? Bilbao's maritime museum opens free to every visitor on Sunday afternoons from 5pm, no residency and no membership required, and on Tuesdays to Bizkaia residents. Otherwise a ticket is €10, or €5 reduced, and under-18s never pay. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 7pm.
Is the Larreineta funicular worth riding? It is not the tourist funicular but a commuter line up a mining hillside in Trapagaran, with a gap of under 50 mm between platform and car. It costs €1.02 with a Barik card, under-15s ride free and each car has room for bikes or pushchairs. Some weekends a bus replaces it.
Do you need to book the Oma Painted Forest? Yes: no car reaches it and no ticket is sold, yet a booking is compulsory, on +34 94 465 16 57. Thirty-four painted groups across roughly 800 living pines by Agustín Ibarrola, 2.8 km on foot from Santimamiñe, about 50 minutes each way. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Which public lifts around Bilbao are free? Three panoramic lifts in Getxo cost nothing, and the Old Port and Usategi cars run seventeen hours a day, 7am to midnight. Crossing the same stretch of water ranges from 40 cents on the Portugalete boat to eleven euros, and the Artxanda funicular costs €0.73 with Barik or €3.50 without.
Which beaches near Bilbao have assisted bathing? Eight in Biscay, from La Arena to Arrigorri, free and bookable from June to September, 11am to 8pm. Only three are reachable on the metro, and Ereaga in Getxo is the easiest, with adapted toilets on the promenade. Groups have to book online before they arrive; individuals can call 662 92 13 97.
Is the Barik card worth buying in Bilbao? Almost always: it costs €3 and cuts Bilbobus from €1.70 to €0.73 and the Artxanda funicular from €3.50 to €0.73. The €5 airport bus fare is officially the price for people without a Barik card, which tells you how the whole system is designed. On Bizkaibus, validate twice.
Can you reach the beaches near Bilbao without a car? Yes: twenty municipalities in Bizkaia have a beach and the metro reaches three, Getxo, Sopela and Plentzia. Those three are also the cheapest, from €1.19 on Barik, and leaving them nearly doubles the fare, up to €2.45 by Bizkaibus. Euskotren line E4 serves Mundaka.
How do you get from Bilbao Airport to the centre? There is no metro. One bus line, the A3247, covers it every quarter of an hour for €5, until a final departure at midnight, and the direction you need for a late flight stops earlier than you would expect, at 22:00. Moyua is the stop for most hotels, and a weekday taxi costs €27.
How do you get to Sopelana beach from Bilbao? Bilbao has no beach of its own. Metro Line 1 reaches two of them in Sopela, and the stop that serves both is not the one carrying the name: it is Larrabasterra. The trip costs €1.30 with Barik or €2.25 single. Arrietara-Atxabiribil suits a full beach day; Barinatxe-La Salvaje is for surfers.
Which metro stop do you use for Getxo? It has seven and none carries its name: Areeta serves the Vizcaya Bridge, Neguri the Ereaga beach and Algorta the Old Port, for €1.19 with Barik. The only UNESCO site in the Basque Country is also a commuter gondola, running 5am to midnight, and three panoramic lifts in Getxo are free.
What are Plentzia and Gorliz beaches like? Two beaches inside one bay at the end of metro Line 1, with calm water, year-round surf schools and the only stretch of the coast where both beaches run assisted bathing. Gorliz has 842 metres of sand and parking for a family day, and a 1,500-metre promenade links the two.
