Bermeo sits 84 minutes from Bilbao, Gernika 61 and Getxo about 20, all of it on scheduled public transport. What makes or breaks a day out here is not the outbound journey at all: it is which service still runs when you want to come home.
Which Bizkaia villages can you reach from Bilbao without a car? Gernika-Lumo is 61 minutes from Bilbao, Mundaka 79 and Bermeo 84 on Euskotren line E4 out of Matiko. Bakio is served by the Bizkaibus A3518 from Moyua, every 30 minutes in summer. A Bizkaibus fare with a Barik card runs from €1.02 in zone 1 to €2.45 in zone 5.
Bizkaia’s visitable villages line up along two axes from Bilbao: the Urdaibai reserve to the east and the Bakio and Gaztelugatxe coast to the north.
Fares before timetables, because they are simple
Bus pricing here is a five-step ladder and nothing else. With a Barik card, according to the Bizkaia transport consortium, a Bizkaibus journey costs €1.02 in zone 1, €1.19 in zone 2, €1.40 in zone 3, €1.90 in zone 4 and €2.45 in zone 5.

Euskotren sits outside that ladder, publishing its rail fares in its own document rather than through the consortium’s operator pages. Two of its conditions are published openly and matter more than the price: under-15s travel free and bicycles travel free on every train.
The four traps in the summer timetable
None of these is about distance, and each one can strand a visitor in a village at nine in the evening.
- The last weekday train stops short. The 10.10pm from Bilbao terminates at Gernika at 11.07pm; the last one running the full line leaves at 9.10pm
- The 10.12pm reaches Bermeo on Saturdays only. On Sundays and public holidays it also ends at Gernika
- The A3527 to Bermeo does not run on public holidays between 1 July and 31 August
- The Bermeo to Bakio link is renumbered, running as the A3524 in winter and the A3517 from 6 June to 31 August
Those four come from the summer timetable as published by Bizkaibus and from the E4 poster issued by Euskotren, so they shift with the season rather than staying fixed. Checking them again in October is not optional, because the winter tables restore some services and remove others.

The rail axis leaves from Matiko and calls at Zazpikaleak, in the Old Town, three minutes later, which is where most visitors should actually board. The Bakio bus leaves from Moyua and runs by motorway through Mungia, arriving at a beach town that has no railway station of its own.
Getxo is the short hop of the group, on the metro rather than the regional network, and it holds seven stations without a single one named Getxo, as explained in the guide to Getxo from Bilbao.
What is actually open when you arrive
Each destination carries its own calendar, and two of them close for long stretches.
Gernika-Lumo holds the Peace Museum, at €6.50 and free on Saturday afternoons, alongside the Assembly House. It also shuts hardest: no opening from 1 to 26 January. The detail sits in the guide to a Gernika day trip.
Bermeo runs the Gaztelugatxe Centre, open only from 23 June to 30 September and closed on Mondays, and sits 27 kilometres from the airport against 35 to central Bilbao, as covered in the guide to Bermeo from Bilbao.
Gaztelugatxe itself never closes and never charges, which makes it the one fixed point in the whole calendar. Entry is free, a ticket is required only on controlled-access days, the cap is 1,462 people a day and the climb is 241 steps, set out in the guide to Gaztelugatxe from Bilbao.

- A harbour and a fish market town → Bermeo, 84 minutes, end of the line

- Travelling with under-15s → the train charges them nothing
- A July or August public holiday → the A3527 to Bermeo does not run, go via Bakio
- A late return → Saturday only, possibly with a change at Amorebieta
Where each axis starts in Bilbao
Two departure points cover the whole map, and mixing them up costs half an hour before the trip begins.
The Urdaibai railway starts at Matiko, on Euskotren, which shares no station with Renfe at Abando and does not appear on the metro map. Its Old Town stop, Zazpikaleak, comes three minutes after the terminus.

The villages that do not fit in a day
Not every village in Bizkaia works as a car-free day trip, and it is cheaper to know that before trying.
Ondarroa depends on the A3915 Bilbao-Durango-Ondarroa motorway line, whose direct service is suspended from 1 to 31 August. Lekeitio connects to its immediate surroundings by the A3536 to Mendexa, with four departures a day in summer. Ea links to Gernika on the A3532, running every two hours between 6am and 10pm.
Inland, the A3917 connects Bilbao with Lemoa and Zeanuri every 60 minutes from 6.15am to 10.15pm in August, and the A3537 ties Plentzia and Gorliz to Mungia every 60 minutes from 7.20am to 9.20pm.
