Two dates can sink a Bilbao Christmas trip. On December 25 and January 1 the Guggenheim, the Fine Arts Museum and the Basque Museum all shut, and last season the market huts closed too. Book around those two days and the city is easy: walkable lights, a one-day farmers’ fair and a museum open on a Monday.
Is Bilbao worth visiting at Christmas? Yes, between 21 and 23 December or 26 and 30 December, when huts, lights and museums overlap. On 25 December and 1 January the main museums shut, and on the night of the 31st the metro stops for hours. Bilbao suits a walking break rather than a big German-style market trip.
Christmas in Bilbao is a city programme called Bilbao Gabonak, running from late November to January 6. This year’s full programme is still to come, so dates marked 2025 show the usual pattern. Guggenheim hours below are already this season’s.
Which dates to book
Book December 21 to 23 or December 26 to 30. December 21, a Monday this year, is the Santo Tomás fair, when farmers fill El Arenal. December 28 is the bonus: a Monday when the Guggenheim opens anyway. If you land on December 24, you still get a morning of museums, then a quiet evening.
If your trip falls in early December, you will get lights and the ice rink but maybe no market huts: last season they opened on December 5, which is a Saturday this year. The Christmas lights ran from 18:00 until midnight each night, so a late dinner still ends under them.
What you lose on Dec 24, 25, 31 and Jan 1
These four days are the trap: two have short hours and two have almost nothing. The Guggenheim closes at 17:00 on December 24 and 31, with its desks shutting 30 minutes earlier. The Fine Arts Museum closes at 15:00 on those days. The Basque Museum does not open at all.
For Christmas Day, the Artxanda funicular runs on a split timetable: on 1 January 2026 it ran 9:15 to 14:30 and 16:30 to 22:00, and the viewpoint at the top is the easiest outing. Book any restaurant before you fly, since a table on the 24th, 25th or 31st is not something to find on the day. Expect a set menu, and ask about the price when you book.
Where it all is on foot
The core of Christmas in Bilbao is a 1.5 km line from Doña Casilda Park to El Arenal, about 20 minutes on foot. Plaza Moyúa sits between them, 92 m from Moyua metro. You can walk all of it in a single evening and skip the transit ticket altogether.
The one thing outside that line is PIN, the children’s fair at Bilbao Exhibition Centre in Barakaldo, 273 m from Ansio on metro line 2. Last season it ran from December 13 to January 5, and our guide to Bilbao at Christmas with kids sorts it against the free options. For single rides on the network, read up on the Barik card before you tap in.
Getting around when the metro stops
On the evenings of December 24 and 31 the transit network stops for dinner. In 2025 Metro Bilbao line 3 paused for four hours and then ran all night, while trams and Euskotren trains finished early, and on December 25 and January 1 those services started late, stopped at midday and were back to normal from about 17:00. The 2026 times come out in the second half of December. If you are out for dinner, stay near your hotel or plan on the night buses.
| Situation | What works | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Dinner on December 31, hotel in the centre | Walk | Abando to Casco Viejo is under 500 m |
| Dinner on December 31, hotel further out | Gautxori night bus | All eight lines finish at Plaza Circular, 16 m from Abando metro |
| Christmas Day outing | Funicular de Artxanda | Lower station at Funicular plaza, 9:15 to 14:30 and 16:30 to 22:00 on 1 January 2026 |
| Trip to PIN | Metro line 2 | Ansio, 273 m from the fair, open 11:00 to 20:00 and €10.50 in 2025 |
| Three Kings parade, January 5 | Metro to Moyua, not the tram | Trams were cut between Arriaga and Pío Baroja from 17:00 to about 21:00 in 2024 and 2025, so Pío Baroja is reachable only from La Casilla |
The Gautxori night bus network is simple once you know that every line ends at the same square. The airport bus and taxis keep their own holiday timetable, so check on the day if you fly out on January 1; the airport guide has the normal options.
Basque words you will see
A few Basque words on posters tell you what is happening. Gabonak means Christmas, and Bilbao Gabonak is the programme’s name. Olentzero is the charcoal burner who brings gifts on the night of December 24, walking with Mari Domingi. The Olentzero parade has been on the afternoon of December 23 in Bilbao, a day before many visitors expect: in 2025 it left Moyúa at 17:45 and reached the Arriaga around 18:30. Twelve days later comes the Three Kings parade, which set off at 18:00 last time.
Talo is the corn flatbread eaten with chorizo at Santo Tomás, and txakoli the local white wine. Azoka means fair or market. For help saying any of this out loud, there is a guide on pronouncing Basque names.
Rain plan
A wet day at Christmas in Bilbao points to the three big museums, as long as it is not December 25 or January 1. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao charges under-18s nothing, the Basque Museum is free every Wednesday, which this season means December 23 and 30, and the Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao is a short walk from Doña Casilda.
Check the Guggenheim fare the week you travel, as the adult price is not the same all year. On January 6 the Guggenheim is your only choice of the three: the other two close.
Frequently asked questions about Christmas in Bilbao
Is Bilbao worth visiting in December?
Bilbao is worth visiting in December for the lights, the market huts and the Santo Tomás fair on 21 December, with museums on normal hours. The weak spots are 25 December and 1 January, when the Guggenheim and the other big museums shut.
Is the Guggenheim Bilbao open on Christmas Day?
No. The Guggenheim Bilbao shuts on 25 December and 1 January. On 24 and 31 December it closes at 17:00, with ticket desks shutting at 16:30. It also opens on Monday 28 December, normally its closing day, so that is a good day to go.
Who is Olentzero in Bilbao?
Olentzero is the Basque Christmas figure, a charcoal burner who brings gifts on the night of 24 December, paired with Mari Domingi. Basque towns parade them on the afternoon of 23 December or the morning of the 24th. In Bilbao the parade has been on the 23rd.
Does the Bilbao metro run on New Year’s Eve?
Partly. On 31 December 2025 metro line 3 paused for four hours over dinner and then ran all night, and trams finished early. The Gautxori night buses all start from Plaza Circular, so dinner plans need a route home. Check the 2026 cut-off in the second half of December.
What can you do in Bilbao when it rains at Christmas?
Bilbao in the rain means the Guggenheim, the Fine Arts Museum and the Basque Museum, each a short metro or tram ride apart. The Basque Museum is free on Wednesdays, including 23 and 30 December. Families can add the PIN fair at Bilbao Exhibition Centre, near Ansio metro.
Bilbao rewards the visitor who books around two closed days rather than through them.
