Bilbao has no big public countdown to plan around, and the first thing to know is the transport: on 31 December 2025 the last metro left at 21:05 and nothing ran until 1:00. Pick where you will be at midnight before you book dinner, and in 2026 that night falls on a Thursday.
What is New Year’s Eve like in Bilbao? A night built around dinner and the Old Town bars afterwards. There is no announced city countdown or firework show. You book a dinner, usually from about 20:30, and move on after 1:00, when the metro and Gautxori night buses return.
New Year’s Eve in Bilbao is a night of booked dinners and bars, with no municipal countdown announced so far. Anything the city adds will appear in the Bilbao Gabonak programme. Hotel menus below carry their year: only one is already priced for 2026.
What to expect without a firework plan
Do not fly in for a fireworks display: none is announced, and from 21:05 to 1:00 the evening is built around tables, not squares. That suits couples and small groups who want a long meal. It disappoints anyone picturing a crowd counting down in front of a big screen.
The day itself still works. The Guggenheim keeps its reduced hours, and if you arrive on the 31st you can fit the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and its ticket rules in before dark, then drop bags and change. Staying near a metro station matters more tonight than on any other date.
Book dinner, and which rooms come with it
A gala dinner with dancing costs roughly 183 to 225 euros a head, and the early sitting forces your hand on transport. Barceló Bilbao Nervión, at Campo Volantín 11, sells its 2026 night at 225 euros from 20:45 until 4:00 with DJ and open bar; phone 944 454 700. A child’s menu is 65 euros.
NH Collection Villa de Bilbao, at Gran Vía 87, charged 183 euros in 2025, from 20:30 to 2:00, and 55 euros for children. If you are sleeping in either hotel, the whole transport question goes away, so ask about a room when you book the table. Palacio de Oriol in Santurtzi sold a 290-euro package in 2025 with double room, breakfast and party, handy only if you want to stay out by the port.
Spanish dinners start late anyway, around 21:00 on a normal night, so this sitting is early by local standards. Restaurant set menus appear through November and December. Ask whether drinks are included, whether there is a deposit and when the table has to clear.
The metro gap and how to get back
From about 21:05 to 1:00 you walk or take a taxi, so plan the walk. The metro then runs all night.
In 2025 trains on the shared central section came every 5 minutes until 3:00, then every 10 until 6:00. Line 3, run by Euskotren, pauses for about four hours over dinner and also runs through the night.
Eight Gautxori night bus lines all use Plaza Circular, right above Abando metro, and ran from 1:00 to 9:00 in 2025. For the wider system, metro lines and the tram has the map, and the Barik card saves queuing for single tickets at 1:00. Heading to the airport on the 1st? Check the airport bus options first, because Bizkaibus stops around midday and returns about 16:30 to 17:00.
| Where you are at midnight | Nearest stop | After 1:00 |

The twelve grapes tradition, explained quickly
Spaniards eat one grape per chime at midnight, and every gala menu includes them. You do not need a square: hotels hand them out with the cava, and in a home or a bar someone will count you in. In a small room, watching the television clock is the normal way to do it.
If you want to join in without a dinner, buy a small bunch at a shop before the afternoon closes. Bars near Plaza Nueva, 151 m from Casco Viejo metro, are the natural place to head after, though each one decides for itself whether it opens that night.
What January 1 looks like
Friday 1 January 2027 starts late and stays short: the Guggenheim, the Fine Arts Museum and the Basque Museum are all shut. On 1 January 2026 the Artxanda funicular ran 9:15 to 14:30 and 16:30 to 22:00, which makes the viewpoint the best daylight plan for a sore head.
Plan a walk along the river and an evening with the Christmas lights, still on until Epiphany. The list of what is open on Christmas Day and January 1 covers the rest, and if your trip runs on to the 5th, the Three Kings parade is the big free event of the season.
In Bilbao on December 31, the metro timetable shapes the night more than any square.
